About Yaya

I, Yaya (she/her) grew up in the greater Montreal (Tiohtiá:ke) area. I’m a multidisciplinary artist, grounded in visual expression, often video works, performance acts and mixed media collages, with the latter at the base of my material exploration and investigation on media and culture.

Grounded in feminist, anticapitalist and decolonial thought, my practice explores resistance to systems of control by investigating surveillance, social norms, and autonomy. Through DIY tactics, recycled materials, and performative interventions, I challenge dominant narratives of identity and representation.

I’m currently taking a short break from my bachelor in fine arts to continue my independent video and body practice on the side. Currently working on a film, you should check out the page here Langue des oiseaux.

I also encourage you to have a look at my Past works and Learning journal where I document my process while studying at the Glasgow School of Art.
